What Is Upholstery?

Upholstery is the work of providing furniture, especially seats, with padding, springs, webbing, and fabric or leather covers. The word upholstery comes from the Middle English word upholder, which referred to a tradesman who held up his goods. The term is equally applicable to domestic, automobile, airplane and boat furniture. A person who works with upholstery is called an upholsterer. Traditional upholstery uses materials like coil springs, animal hair, coir, straw and hay, hessians, linen scrims, wadding and mainly traditional hand sewn techniques and we always use hammer and tacks. Traditional upholstery often takes much longer than Contemporary Upholstery and there can be a price difference in these two techniques.

Modern upholstery can involve cutting edge techniques and an expansive range of elements, including rubber foam, elastic webs and synthetic Dacron. The elements come in layers allowing for a faster application and flexible shapes.
